For gravy


Tomatoes puree

Ginger paste

Garlic paste

Green chillies

Prawn (Tiger prawns/shrimps)


Garam Masala Powder

Turmeric powder

Red chilli powder

Garam Masala (whole)

White oil/Mustard oil






Marinate the prawns(250 gms) with 2 tsp of turmeric powder, 1 tsp of red chilli powder and a pinch of salt. Let the fish marinate for about 20 mins. By that time make a paste of 2 medium sized onions. 5 gms of ginger-garlic paste. Grate about 100 gms of coconut.



After 20 mins of marination, take about 2 tbs of oil (whichever cooking medium you want to use) in a wok. Allow the oil to get heated well. After that, put the prawns into it and fry it till the skin turns slightly reddish in colour. Now, take the prawns out of the wok and lower the flame. In that same oil add the onion paste, ginger-garlic paste and tomato puree. Raise the flame and let the three ingredients cook till they lose their individual raw flavor. After, they seem perfectly fried, add one cardamom, 2 small cinnamon stick and 2 cloves into it. Also, add a bay leaf. Let the ingredients imbibe the flavout of the whole garam masala for some time. While this continues, you can lower the flame and keep the wok covered for about 2-3 minutes. After this add about 1 tsp of turmeric powder (do not add too much of it as part of it has already been used while marinating the prawns). Then, add 2 tsp of red chilli powder and stir it a little. Then, add a pinch of sugar, ½ a tsp of garam masala powder and salt-to-taste. Mix them well. Sprinkle a small amount of water and continue cooking over low flame. Also, keeo the wok covered for about 3-4 minutes, this will accelerate the cooking process and also allow the aromas of each ingredient mix well. After this, add the grated coconut stir a little and add ½ a cup for water to make considerable amount of gravy in which the prawns can dip. Allow it to come to simmer. After this add the fried prawns into the gravy. Keep it for cooking over low flame for another 3-4 minutes. Inbetween, its cooking process you can add few green chillies for added flavor and taste. When the gravy seems thick, the Prawn curry/Bengali recipes/Prawn Malaikari is ready to be served with steamed rice.
